Kelp 02:21
Lock all your friends in the same rubbish bin and I will take them out for you. Feel a sense of generation guilt towards our youth. Staring at the ceiling I am crazy restless but expensive hugs are a sound investment in life. Our star signs all aligned and I’m sorry to say that your credit cards all declined again. Stuff all your eggs in the same basket and I will squish them down for you. Nobody ever has to tell you what you’re supposed to do. Stole another note from your diary just so I could tattoo it on my cheek and give you something else to look forward to when I’m lying in my bed in the middle of the night and I’m trying to get to sleep. I wanna write words that ain’t in the dictionary yet. Make new friends through a half lit cigarette. Oh and fine, we’re wasting our lives. And now that I’m gone, you’ve broken the space-time continuum so I have backtracked the signs that led to our misinformed participants and falsely led predicaments again. 404 not found

Zone 03:18
We are no longer on speaking terms There’s something in the weight of your demeanour that makes the jealous thoughts a little clearer. I always put my face up near the freezer even when it’s warm. We are no longer on speaking terms. I saw another news report on TV that disregards your opinion completely. But at least I’ll make it home before this meeting even when it’s cold.

Bleach 03:13
When I was 7 I was staring down a barrel of a gun. I didn’t think it was my fault but it seems that it was. Suck it up like bleach through the side of the couch. I’m stuck like bleach to the side of the couch. I don’t suppose you got any idea where this bus goes? Take the 219 and ride this baby all the way to Brighton Beach. And there you’ll find a place that I will soon erase when I’m leader of the states. EMOJI There’s something in the water I refuse to drink but I cannot let my actions dictate me. I wanna say sober but I binge instead I’m a privileged piece of shit in a queen sized bed. What you don’t know is gonna kill you in the end. She said I’m less charismic than the kitchen sink and I cannot let my actions dictate me. And I tried saying sober but I binge instead I’m a privileged piece of trash in a queen sized bed. What you don’t know is gonna kill you in the …

Hybrid 02:34
I am a hybrid of human emotions sometimes. I get angry at people around me most nights. A picture tells a thousand words, And I narrowed mine down just to five. Well, I don’t know if you’re busy later, But leaving the house does wonders for the spine. And you said something or another about leaving the house and keeping your bones together regardless of the time and regardless of the weather. But I wish that I could find a way for you to stay.

Season 03:39
Tell your father that I’m sorry and that I never meant to hurt him. It was self-defence and he was asking for it trying to steal my wallet through the supermarket near Altona Meadows. But it was just a phase, another season change. Another caked up face, it was just a phase, another season change. Another round of drinks that you refused to pay, another season change. It was just a phase held against your name. Who knew this gun licence could come in handy? Tear out the holster like it’s cotton candy. It was self-defence, and I was fully aware that I can’t compare it to shooting an unarmed man in the carpark again. Well it was 15 years to the date or a couple months later. It was just a phase, another season change. Another fucked up face, another basket case, another season change. Another round of drinks that you didn’t pay, another season change. It was just a phase held against your name. But I’m just a quotation mark you left outside your rude remarks again. Damaging, damaging, all of your assets have washed away like a lipstick stain. It’s the haemorrhaging game that I’m always willing to play.

Derrimut 01:51
Anxiety. The surgery that’s making small incisions in my brain. Feel the blood rushing out I don’t expect my retinas to drown. The fastest trip that Uber would allow. If I got paid for every day I miss you, then I’d never work again as compensation for the time you bought stability back to my life. The carpentry joke got you every time. When I got back to Derrimut, the entire world was staring right back out.

Wash (Off) 04:23
I use a body double for all my stunts. Post puberty blues and I haven’t seen a fresh face in months. Mark off the days where I didn’t get paid. To be perfectly honest, they don’t call me Jarrow just for the name. I’ve been slapped in the face by the mundane thoughts again. Wash off to the sounds of a clogged up shower drain. I kinda promised my parents that I wouldn’t curse. To be perfectly honest I’d probably swear out by the end of the verse. Do you think I’m really committing a crime? Not being so sweet 100,000% of the time? I’ve been slapped in the face by the mundane thoughts again. Wash off to the sounds of a clogged up shower drain. Looked you dead in the eye and I still don’t remember your face. Wash off to the sounds of a clogged up shower drain. Girl I was wish I was typical. I’m so damn metaphysical. Everything falls into one place. Sell all my clothes off to charity. Tearing apart the economy. Everything forms into one face.

about

A product of Melbourne, Australia’s rich indie and punk-rock scene, Jarrow is the self-taught, self- produced, multi-instrumentalist wunderkind you’ve been wishing for.

Drawing inspiration equally from 21st century meme culture and classic indie pop-rock, Expensive Hugs was named in response to the short-lived (and in hindsight, pretty weird) ‘Free Hugs’ viral phenomenon of the mid 2000’s.

The record is a rapid-fire dash through Jarrow’s world of hooks, soundscapes and riff-jams. Jarrow (Dan Oke to his friends) describes his sound as "garage rock meets indie pop meets post punk meets free jazz” and while he was being tongue in cheek at the time, he's not that far off.

Expensive Hugs reveals the immense pleasure that Oke takes from experimentation in the studio. Piano rumbas follow tightly constructed pop-vignettes and extended guitar freak-outs. It’s all there in 29 minutes of joy, written and performed with a knowing grin.
